The Best Token Generator for Foundry VTT

Make a token from an actor's portrait right in Foundry: a frame, a background, the head, weapon or wings over the frame, or a subject for the Dynamic Token Ring. Crop and resize the actor portrait too. Free, MIT licensed, the same editor as on the website.

Install

Foundry VTT V13 or V14. In Setup → Add-on Modules → Install Module paste the manifest URL:

https://thebesttokengenerator.joxter.me/foundry/latest/module.json

Then enable it in your world: Game Settings → Manage Modules. Updates come as usual, with the Update button in Setup.

Open the editor

Available to the actor's owner with the Upload New Files permission (Trusted Player and above by default).

What it does

Token
The portrait in a frame on a background, with brushes: Above frame for parts sticking out over the edge, Under frame, Erase and Restore. Ready-made frames, or your own from Foundry's file picker. A preview on a battle map shows how the token will look on the scene.
Dynamic Token Ring
Tick Foundry dynamic ring: no frame or background, the portrait sits inside the ring and the parts you mark “above” pop out over it. The preview uses your world's ring in the prototype's colors.
Save token
Writes worlds/<world>/tokens/<actor>-<id>-token.webp (with the ring: -subject.webp) into the actor's prototype token and its tokens on the current scene, and turns the ring on or off to match. Next time the editor opens with your last edit (brushes, positions, frame and background; not the undo history).
Portrait
The actor's image, separate from the token: crop it (free, 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 2:3) and set the size. Save portrait writes <actor>-<id>-portrait.webp and sets it as the actor image; the next crop starts from the original picture.

The module writes only to worlds/<world>/tokens/, one set of files per actor, overwritten on each save. Everything runs inside your Foundry: no analytics, your images never leave it.
